a slightly wonky one, mind you, but magic juan beamed into town last sunday for the deaf closing party. for an artist/act that pretty empitomises (epitomised?) techno as 'future music', it was a fairly un-futuristic show: a combination of dodgy sound (not their fault), occasionally mis-firing equipment (debatable) and what seemed to me like a couple of un-rehearsed sections (definitely their fault). also the inter-song banter ('dublin, we love you' x 10 etc) didn't fit with my stereotyped preconceived notions.
still, i enjoyed the show. the set was heavy on the earlier stuff, which makes sense i guess, as these translate best to a live performance. 'off to battle', 'no ufos', 'time space transmat' and 'clear' were great; the first half of 'starlight' was lost in a haze of sub bass while a hi-tech funk version of 'game one' got there in the end, despite confusion amongst the ranks for the early section. skurge and mike banks freestyle keys on certain tracks sounded fantastic, while atkins got into the groove after a while.
rough set list: cosmic cars not sure not sure time space transmat off to battle starlight game one no ufos a new one? alleys of your mind clear technicolour (apparently encored with this, i had to hoof it.)
americhord was great, annie hall was dull - a very poorly sequenced set - and i missed garnier. shame about moritz von oswald not be able to play. the end.
tobias. was great on saturday night. a nifty little live set-up - ableton, an 808 (which, he told us later, he bought in 1983, so it's technically his 'child') and a torq trigger pad (i don't know the proper name). he was triggering the drum machine and 'playing' a lot of the effects, vocals, pads etc from the torq - very good.
yuksek was not my thing, but the atmosphere in the upstairs room was top - the new venue works very well, with the soundsystems on both floors being the main talking points: they are superb, and the bassbins are dave redsetta-approved. it begs the question - how have so many dublin venues managed to get away with crummy set-ups for so long?
the new dj box is fantastic too...
here's two nice pictures from the night, courtesy of stevie b.
as of this week, pogo moves to twisted pepper, on middle abbey street, in somewere called the 'northside'. a bit of a surprise, but - true to form - i am always one of the last to know. thanks to all at the pod for the last three years.
tobias. is live in the basement this saturday, with yuksek in the live room. if you would like to come down, please drop me a mail.

i'm (obviously) all for vinyl only releases, but how can you justify charging e12.99 for a single 12" release, like a danish label called lomidhigh are doing in the techno section here? this smacks of... actually, it doesn't 'smack of' anything, it is just plain greedy. given the issues that record companies are having with getting people to pay for any type of music, let alone vinyl, how is a rip-off price tag like this going to convince the ever-dwindling numbers of record buyers to keep on forking out?
a remix package featuring surgeon, marcel
dettmann, substance, martyn, jamie vex'd... could this be any more appealing to
the trend-conscious nerd? a tip of the hat to whoever at hot flush pulled this
one together, as it contains some right corkers. the natural reaction is to
reach for surgeon first, and you'd be right: what starts as a twitching, broken
atmospheric affair kicks up a gear with the arrival of the 4/4 kick, morphing
into a pleasingly direct techno-meets-half-stepper. martyn continues his rich vein
of form with another technicolour two-step affair, while jamie from vex'd does
drunken, wonky, pitch-shifting detroit-hop brilliantly. marcel dettmann and
substance pull things underground, while scb - a variation of both name and
sound for scuba - suprises with a simple, detailed and well-executed take on
minimal techno.
chez damier 'can you feel it' (mk dub)
[kms]
picked this reissue up on interstellar
sounds recently. christ on a bike, it's amazing, mk with some help from derrick
may. i'd like to say i remember it from my yoot, but i don't, apart from
hearing it played out a couple of times. have a listen here
trench 'comatose' [subject detroit]
flying in the face of the doomsayers, dj bone's label have been banging them out recently - the original mix on this grey coloured release is the pick of the bunch. on first listen, it comes across as a deliberately strange, but the nighmarish trippy spoken vocal draws you in. soon, the driving blake baxter-esque beats, dramatic stabs and verse/chorus/verse will have you wide awake.
alex under 'multiplicanciones 3' [cmyk]
the net 28 crew is flexing their muscles
again after an extended siesta. the mara trax release does nothing for me; the
damian schwarz album is ready for rotation while, in between, this
three-tracker from alex under is filling the gap nicely. a change in style to
reflect current climates, but the tight production and distinctive edits
remain.
i like this label, but i've not quite got
it - as in shelled out for a 12" - to date. when the vinyl arrives, this
remix from function will break my sandwell district duck. on first listen, the
crunchy, reverbed riff might make you lump it in with the many other mediocre
dubby offerings at the moment, but there's something mesmerising about the
stripped, rigid and slightly industrial simplicity...
ican 'chiclet's theme' [planet e]
ring the bells, the recent 'what to finish
a set with' conundrum is over, thanks to this almost-by-numbers S2-produced piece
of uplifting techno. File alongside Los Hermanos.
windsurf 'coastlines' [internasjonal]
me and windsurf, we've clicked see. this is
the first album release on prins thomas' label, pairing the excellent
four-tracker from earlier this year with (what we are nearly sure are) six new
tracks. not all gold, but there's certainly enough to provide you with an
afternoon of balearic bliss.
